Cupid Called Belize: A Valentine’s Wedding in Paradise

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Valentine’s Day. The most romantic day of the year to say “I DO.”  Marriage is the union of two lives and two hearts forever in love.  What could be more romantic than getting married on Valentine’s Day on a tropical island?   Just ask Kim and Eloy.  They tied the knot in Ambergris Caye, Belize on Valentine’s day!  I call them true romantics.

A very special message from the groom right before the wedding

“I found happiness, laughter, strength, tears, faith in God, and true love! True love was something I could only dream of until I met you. I look forward to continuing our life together as one. Our connection all along was to be here today in beautiful Belize for our wedding day!” (words from Eloy’s vows)

Love was in the air.  Hearing Kim’s excitement in her voice early in the day gave me the chills.  I can’t express in words how happy and excited I was for Kim and Eloy.  I met Kim several years ago through my good friend Shannon who frequents Belize.  When Kim and Eloy contacted me to plan their big day with them I was flattered and thrilled that they chose Belize. When Kim was asked why she and Eloy decided to elope Kim told usWe decided to elope together because it seemed the least stressful.  We love to travel, and most of our very special and most meaningful moments together have been when we’ve traveled.  Plus we prefer to not have a whole lot of distractions, and it seemed ideal for romance for it to be just the two of us.”

“You are the yin to my yang. You are the calm to my storm. You’ve captured my heart and now my heart belongs to you.” Kim expresses her love in her personalized vows to Eloy

Congratulation Kim & Eloy!

The ceremony and wedding location at the incredibly beautiful Captain Morgan’s Retreat was beautiful.  Kim is a beautiful woman and truly a stunning bride in her gorgeous gown.  Her handsome groom also looked first class. After the ceremony Kim, Eloy, Ari, Dorian (witness #1), photographer Jose Luis and assistant celebrated with Valentines wedding cupcakes as a gift from I DO Belize Weddings, champagne from their friend Shannon,  followed by pictures and a romantic dinner for two.

Rain is unusual in February yet Kim and Eloy experienced a light mist of rain after their ceremony.  It was towards the end of taking pictures. Did you know that rain happens to be good luck on a wedding day?  Rain is said to be a symbol of children in the future just as rain promotes growth in the farmer’s fields.  According to an old wives’ tale, the knot in “tying the knot” becomes wet and is harder to break, thus making the marriage stronger.

Kim and Eloy’s special day was filled with romance and beauty.  I hope you enjoy the photographs as much as I do!  Thank you to Jose Luis Zapata Photography for capturing the newleywed’s beautiful memories.  You may read more about Kim & Eloy’s wedding in paradise featured in the Ambergris Today.  http://www.ambergristoday.com/content/stories/2011/february/16/saying-i-do-valentine%E2%80%99s-day

Congratulations and much love to Kim & Eloy Alderete!

Our Green Bride Guide: Eco-friendly Wedding Tips

Green Wedding Tips by I DO Belize Weddings

It’s no surprise that Eco-friendly Belize attracts more than those interested in an environmentally friendly vacation.  With the growing trend of “Green Weddings” Belize is one of the world’s top green destination wedding locations.  Why Go Green? Small eco-friendly choices can decrease your wedding’s impact on the environment without sacrificing style or elegance.  Even with one or two green options you’ll be making a difference for the earth and increasing the joy of your day.

Welcome Baskets. For those of you thinking about gift baskets for your guests upon arrival consider beach bags!  One item that gets thrown out after the goodies are gone is the gift basket.  Do you really expect your guests to lug an empty basket back to the States with them?  Unfortunately off to the landfill they usually go.  Beach bags or gift bags are versatile, and can be easily packed into a suitcase.  Fill the bags with goodies like Belizean jams, jellies, spices, hot sauces, and rum cake.

Wedding Yoga. We hope you’re planning an “I DO Belize Wedding” and that our prompt detailed responses, suggestions, and bridal calls are keeping you from feeling stressed.  We want you to have fun planning your big day but let’s face it…combine wedding planning, bridal magazines, websites, dress shopping, invitations, and getting advice from friends and family all of the details before your wedding day can naturally feel totally overwhelming.   The physical yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditations are the perfect way to self-navigate into excellent physical and emotional health, and a state of inner calm and relaxation.  Try just ten poses two to three times a week to notice a difference.  If you’re new to yoga pick up a yoga for beginners book or try a gentle yoga class.

Invitations and paper. It’s very exciting that so many print companies are finally starting to use post- consumer products to create beautiful invitations, programs, and personal stationary! Weddings can generate a huge amount of paper consumption, so give careful thought to items that can be reduced. Use recycled paper wherever possible for wedding invitations; most companies can offer this option. Also consider treeless paper made from materials such as bamboo, hemp and kenaf.  Emily Anderson, author of “ecochic weddings” blog, has a few suggestions for eco-friendly invitations and printing.  http://bit.ly/7yI6J

Invitation by The Green Kangaroo

Here are some of our favorite Eco-friendly invitation companies that use recycled paper, invitations made from tree free Kozo papers, & papers made using wind energy that are carbon neutral, and FSC certified.

Flowers. Use local native flowers!  Many traditional wedding flowers have to be imported to island destinations.  Transportation and care of these flowers requires extra resources.  If you’re lucky enough to marry here in Belize our native flowers are some of the most beautiful tropical flowers in the world!  Plus, you’ll be saving a lot of money using local verses imported flowers.

Jewelry.   North America contributes $16 billion a year into the jewelry market that could be infused into the green economy through the purchase of socially and environmentally responsible jewelry. Eco-conscious jewelers use recycled stones and metals, as well as ethically sourced diamonds, gems and metals to create breathtaking and unique items. Family heirlooms, vintage pieces, or handmade items are also sustainable, and often less expensive options to consider.

Transportation. Eliminate the vehicles.  Choose a reception venue that’s walkable from the ceremony.  In Belize there are plenty of breathtaking beach locations where you can hold both your ceremony and reception.

Favors. Yes!  Favors can be earth friendly too.   Often people come up with very cute favors which unfortunately guests don’t end up using. Chelsea Clinton gave reusable tote bags that they can use in place of paper or plastic for grocery shopping.  Imagine how cute would tropical personalized grocery totes be!

Chelsea Clinton’s pick for “simple and special favors”

Eco-friendly flip flops make great wedding favors that guests can take home and wear again.  Look for flip flops made from natural materials like rubber, jute, or hemp.  Roxy makes a line of these flip flops starting at $9/pair.

Socially conscious donations in place of favors seem especially appropriate for the green bride. Pick a worthy association (something important to you), and notify the guests on pretty cards of handmade paper.  Consider places such as Nature Conservancy, Green Peace, Rainforest Network, Earth First, Farm Sanctuary, or even a Belize wildlife or reef preservation such as Green Reef or Belize Ecotourism Association.  Plantable seed content makes a cute and budget friendly addition! (which leads us to our next eco-favor.

Plantable eco-friendly place cards favors are a hit!  Beach theme seed place cards serve a decorative, a wedding favor and place card all in one!  These “Please be seeded” place cards perfect for a beach wedding and only run around $2.00 each!   Arranged seating not your style?  Reusable tins with plantable seeds and a saying is sure way to make a statement.  “Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower” -Anon.

Now what? Decided to make your Belize wedding an eco-friendly themed wedding day?  Contact I DO Belize Weddings today to learn more and start planning.

Latest Trends in Colored Wedding Dresses

September 19, 2009 by Mary

dreamstime_1125050Here comes the bride all dressed in white—or ivory, pink, red, yellow, or even black! The wedding gown, one of the most important aspects of the wedding, now comes in a wide variety of colors. The bride is no longer limited to the traditional options of white or cream. Although, it not yet widely accepted, wearing colored wedding dresses is the latest trend that is dramatically growing in popularity these days.

Choosing a colored wedding dress is not easy as you think. For one, it may raise some eyebrows especially among those who are traditionalists. If you are a people pleaser, you may find this problematic. Another issue would be the color choice, with so many shades to choose from, you may find it overwhelming to come up with a decision.

To make it easier for you to make a choice here are some of the latest trends in colored wedding dresses as well as tips on how to choose this kind of wedding gown.

Latest Trends in Color Choices

  • Deep red

A fashion expert once said that the red wedding gown is so beautiful; this trend would probably become a norm in wedding fashion in the future. That is not far from happening since a red wedding gown is truly stunning and eye-catching. Not to mention, many brides look good on this color.

  • Pastel shades

Pastel shades such as lavender, mint green and baby blue are also in. This is because some brides, even though they want to break away from the norm of white or cream, do not want to look too bold and daring. By wearing pastel shades, they skip the traditional colors without overdoing it.

  • Daring black

Another hot item in colored wedding dresses is black. Some brides will not even dare to consider this type of color due to superstitious beliefs. However, those who are bold enough are able to carry this elegant color with confidence and poise.

Tips on Choosing Colored Wedding Dress

  • Choose a color that you love and will look good on you. It is not enough that you choose your favorite color. You should also choose something that will look flattering on you. For example if you have yellowish skin tone, it would not be advisable to wear a yellow wedding gown.
  • Pick a shade that will blend well with the wedding. Another thing to keep in mind is that your color preference should not clash with the theme and overall look of the wedding.
  • Go for something that would express your personality and style. Your color choice should be evocative of your own personal style and character. If you have gothic style, black would be a good choice for you. If you like princess fashion, pink is ideal.
  • Avoid colors that have negative connotation or superstition. If you want to please people with your color choice, it would be best if you stay away from shades that are associated with anything negative or unlucky. For example, black is associated with grieving and should not be worn if you do not want to seem as if you are mournful during your wedding day.
  • Select hues that blend well with the season. Also a good way to pick a shade is to choose the colors of the season. For example, if you are getting married on autumn, fall colors such as yellow, gold, red, and orange would be ideal. For winter, silver and other metallic shades would be a great option.

Color is an excellent way to stand out with your wedding gown. But just be careful when choosing a colored wedding gown. Remember, only a thin line separates classy from trashy.

10 Top spots to snorkel

Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Belize

One of the western Caribbean’s great delights resides roughly 20 minutes by boat from Ambergris Cay. On my first visit, I was mesmerized by dozens of nurse sharks, jacks, stingrays and grunts cavorting with snorkelers over turtle grass and reefs. Here, I have swum with the most substantial wild fish — normally only seen by scuba divers — in only 6 to 10 feet of water.

On-site secret: Float from the feeding area to the shallow reefs and discover a dreamlike setting of sun-dappled coral and tiny reef denizens. Keep an eye out for: eagle rays. On more than one occasion I’ve been thrilled to see a majestic spotted eagle ray soaring through the reefs.

Elope to a Romantic Tropical Island

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Karen and Gary came to Belize in search of a relaxing vacation with chances to adventure.  Somewhere to tie the knot and honeymoon all in one.   Somewhere incredible, magical, and romantic.   Somewhere called Belize…

Gary and Karen enjoyed a full week on the island before saying “I Do” five miles north at Los Encantos Villa Del Sol.  The newlyweds are considering taking a trip to the Mayan ruins and Cave tubing before returning to the states later this week.

The stunning couple exchanged vows with just the two of them at the end of the beautifully decorated pier.   They also included the Belize butterfly release into their own beautiful ceremony they selected.  After making their wishes they released the graceful butterflies over the sea.  Within minutes of beginning their first dance the couple was full of joy when their favorite boat captain drove by the pier.  Karen and Gary took their first dance right in the boat on the Caribbean Sea!  After their champagne toast the couple dined on the veranda of their luxurious and cozy villa overlooking the ocean with dinner prepared by a personal chef and wedding cake!

The evening was full of fun and romance.

One of the island’s most intimate weddings yet!  Congratulations Karen and Gary!

May 17, 2008  White Sands Cove Resort

Hi Keli!

Sorry it’s taken us so long to get back to you. We arrived home last week and since then we have been slowing adjusting to reality….needless to say it’s been hard.

Anyway, Curt and I wanted to thank you again for all your help in planning the wedding. It was absolutely perfect!

Everything was perfect, the flowers, the arch, the ceremony, the resort, the beach, the reception, the cake, etc. Curt and I and our family and friends had so much fun! There were many compliments to you on how wonderful the wedding was and how great of a job you did (I just wanted to pass that along). Everyone loved Belize and many of our friends and family (Curt and I included) are already talking about their next trip.

As for the honeymoon, well that was perfect too, a little rainy at times, but it didn’t matter. Costa Rica is beautiful! We went ziplining, relaxed in the hot springs at Arenal, got messages, went kayaking, walked on the beach, laid by the pool, ate too much, etc. I definitely recommend a visit there, however, as beautiful as it is, Belize is still my favorite place!

When Curt and I started talking about having our wedding in Belize, I didn’t think we could pull it off. I don’t think we could have if it weren’t for you. We honestly can’t thank you enough for all you have done. This is one wedding I don’t think ANYONE will forget. Thanks for the memories!

Curt and Lori

P.S. Next time we are in Belize we will be sure to give you a call!

May 3, 2008  White Sands Cove Resort

Keli,

Thank you SO MUCH for everything! I’m sorry we forgot to call before we left White Sands, it totally slipped our minds and by the time we remembered, it was too late.

You were awesome and we’re so happy with how beautiful evrything was! It was truely the best day ever and you really made it special for us. We can’t thank you enough. I just hope that other people realize how great you are at your job and how much you put into everything.

Thanks again and please stay in touch!

Keli!

Wow…. What a day! Everything was perfect. Thank you so much. You are truly blessed with a special talent.

I was looking through all my stuff and I don’t think I got that participation certificate from the minister….did you snag a copy? I am anxiously awaiting the CD! I would also like to sing your praises to anyone who is considering a belizean wedding and in search of a planner, please consider me when potential brides are looking for the best!

The movers come tomorrow and I am swamped with boxes, so much to do! I do want to extend a welcome to San Diego if you’re ever in the need of a tropical vacation away from your tropical vacation spot. We’d love to have you, your labrador and a guest!

Always a pleasure.

February 21, 2008  La Perla Del Caribe Beach Villas

Dear Keli,

John and I have only been home for 4 days and we are already talking about when we can return to Ambergris Caye, Belize! It was definitely our best vacation ever…. and my wedding was LITERALLY a page out of a fairy tale!

Everyone agrees that you should win some kind of award for the your amazing talent as a wedding planner! I loved my “special water” and fan programs! John’s t-shirt was sooo funny and i LOVE the “mother of the bride” and “father of the bride” baseball hats! Sari made our stay at La Perla Del Caribe so special. If we ever have a beach house we want it to look just like Villa Pearl at La Perla!

I am sooo obsessed with my photos! (i seriously love myself in 55 and 39) hahaha! my flowers are PERFECTION!!!!….even better than what i imagined!!!

Thanks again! It was definitely the best day of my life!!!!

XOXO, shari

February 14, 2008  Belize Yacht Club

Dear Keli,

The whole entire trip was amazing. I am back at work now and just following up with emails. Thanks again for everything. It was such a great time, I don’t even know what to say. There is no way I could have had that kind of party up here!!! The only way to have that much fun was to get away and you helped with that big time, thanks so much. I have the marriage certificate from Mom & Dad and have already started the process of changing my name. That is really weird by the way… exciting but weird. I have had to practice writing my new last name so many times… I am really slow at signing it right now but I am sure I will get faster in time.

The flowers were also beautiful and we look forward to getting our pictures developed! After the ceremony, Clayton and I walked down the beach and had our wedding dinner at Capricorn! Dear Keli,

We are in Portland visiting family right now. All went well and we were very happy. The wedding was beautiful and you and Blanca did an excellent job on everything. Marilyn and Michelle were great to work with at the hotel. The trellis was beautiful, and they took some really great pictures.

Thank you.

Take care, Kelly

Hello!

Well, I FINALLY had time to put together albums of the pictures from the wedding. I am very sorry for the delay — suffice it to say that I have been insanely busy at work since we returned from Belize, and I am just now surfacing for air.

We wanted to thank each of you again for everything you and your staff did to make our wedding absolutely PERFECT! You thought of every detail so we didn’t have to — and that was better than we could even imagine!! We can’t possibly thank you enough!

The following link is an album of pictures from the trip (hanging out, poker nights, snorkeling & diving, cave tubing, Mayan ruins, dinners. This link is an album of pictures from the wedding day:

Please let me know if you want any of these pictures to include on your website, and I can send them to you on a CD (we also have a ton more pictures on CD — what we uploaded was only a subset). Also, if you have pictures and don’t mind sharing, we’d love to see them.

Hope all is well — and we hope to see you again very soon. Take care.

Trip Review from Ambergris Caye website

We arrived San Pedro in the evening, checked in our hotel at Royal Caribbean, and headed to town for dinner at a great local place. I can’t remember the names of all the places we ate but the food was great everywhere but one place! We were so tired but somehow made it to pack in quite a few drinks our first night which made it hard to get up our first day. The next afternoon we met our wedding coordinator to fill out paperwork. She took us to lunch and we had a great time. Later we went snorkling, it was amazing! Shark Ray Alley was so cool! The next three day we relaxed and just walked around and were beach bums! It was perfect, we hardly did a thing! We found the people of Belize to be very friendly and kind people.

The wedding- It was raining all morning! By the afternoon the sun came out and rain stopped. We ran into Kelly, our coordinator, in the afternoon and she gave us a ride on her golf cart back to Royal Caribbean. My husband (well fiance at the time) decided last minute he did want more wines so we had her pick some up and on her way back to the resort hubbie realizes he forgot his wedding shirt! So 45 minutes before the ceremony he asks her to run to town and pick out a black button down size large and bring it back. What pressure! She made it, found one, and we were thrilled. The ceremony was just the two of us, the minister, and our witnesses were coorinator and a girl brought for us. Both lovely people. The ceremony was beautiful! The minister did a beautiful ceremony and our coodinator included a heart shaped sand jar for us to fill with sand during the ceremony and take back for memories. It was perfect. The entire day could not have been more perfect and we couldn’t have done it without the help. We asked them to stay for our champagne toast and hangout with us a bit, it was fun to have our “maid of honor” and second witness at our ceremony. We watched the sunset then headed to town for dinner. We are big fans of El Patio so we ate there.

The next day we continued beach bumming and the day after went to the mainland. We stayed at Five Sisters and it was beautiful. Their staff was excellent. We found food to be best at Blancaneax Lodge. This was out honeymoon and where we did all our tours. Cave tubbing was amazing! We went ziplining which was fantastic. The ruins were incredible at Xunintunich.

We are so excited to return to Belize, I think for our first anniversary we might go back. Thanks to all those that made our time perfect, we couldn’t have done it without all the arrangements which were made for us.

Hi Keli,

Thank you for meeting with such short notice to assist us with our paperwork! We had no idea before getting to San Pedro what needed to be done. We couldn’t have gotten it done without your services. Over all it was a very good experience, thank you, and we hope to return to lovely Belize.
